PM to introduce Sex Offenders Bill
Prime Minister Bruce Golding said the Sexual Offences Bill would be brought before Parliament for deliberation before the end of next month.
He announced in Gordon House yesterday that the government is working to have the bill passed into law by year end.
The Bill is aimed at protecting women and children from sex crimes.
Mr. Golding said the establishment of a Sex Offenders Registry and a regime to monitor sex offenders will be included in the Bill.
Up to October 12, carnal abuse had reportedly increased by 7.5 percent compared with the corresponding period last year.
Opposition Member of Parliament for South Central St. Catherine, Sharon Haye Webster has called for the government to implement adequate social support programmes to sensitise communities about the Sexual Offences Bill.
She said behavioral change among community members regarding sexual offences would be critical to the success of the programme.
