Woman sentenced to six years

27 year old Camesha Blake of Greater Portmore, St. Catherine is to serve her six-year prison term for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.



The ruling was made yesterday by the Court of Appeal, which dismissed her appeal against the sentence.



Blake had appealed against the sentence on the grounds that it was manifestly excessive.



She had pleaded guilty in April last year to the charges.



She was arrested and charged in February last year, when the police raided her house and found several rounds of ammunition in a component set.



She was taken to the police station and before she was placed in a cell, she was searched and a firearm was found in her underwear.



Blake told a probation officer that she had purchased the gun for protection because sometime before someone attempted to rape her.
