Samuda meets food distributors

Industry and Commerce Minister Karl Samuda is now meeting with the country’s major food distributors.

This is the second meeting since last month to discuss the price of basic food items.

Today’s meeting was called following complaints by consumers that they have not been seeing a reduction in the cost of food items as promised by Mr. Samuda three weeks ago.

Mr. Samuda said he would be discussing the decline in the Jamaican dollar and its impact on food prices with the distributors and food retailers.

He also said he’s hoping that the Jamaican dollar will recover value so that some level of stability may be restored to the distributive and business sectors.

Yesterday, Central Bank Governor Derrick Latibeaudiere expressed confidence that the slide in the value of the Jamaican dollar will be halted in coming weeks.
