Jamaica joins Tri-lateral Cooperation on biofuels
Jamaica has been named among a new group of countries to be included in the Tri-lateral Cooperation in the area of biofuels.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed yesterday between the world’s leading producers of ethanol, Brazil and the United States.
Energy Minster Clive Mullings says at a time when the country is creating a domestic demand for ethanol fuel, its participation in the tri-lateral partnership is very fitting.
He says the creation of fuel from ethanol will preserve socio-economic stability, while breaking the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Mr Mullings says with the technical assistance and support from the governments of Brazil and the US, the country will be better prepared to meet the demand from locally produced biofuels including bio diesel.
He says participation in the MOU will facilitate the country’s involvement in the emerging global biofuels market.
Mr Mullings believes this will also strengthen the country’s move towards energy security, as the programme encourages domestic production and consumption of biofuels.
