Professor of Sociology, Dr. Jaslin Salmon is warning that the retention of the death penalty for capital offences could have adverse effects on children in Jamaica.
Parliamentarians, who have been debating the issue for the last two weeks, were expected to vote on the controversial issue on Monday.
However, Prime Minister Bruce Golding postponed the vote until next Tuesday allowing more time for members of parliament to reconsider or reaffirm their position.
Dr. Salmon is adamant that the measure, if retained, could send a wrong message to children.
Dr. Salmon says such a move would further confuse children who have already been traumatized by the level of murders in the country.
