A special committee has been set up to formulate strategies to deal with any likely fallout in the labour market from the global economic crisis.

The decision followed a meeting today involving Labour Minister Pearnel Charles, trade union representatives, members of academia and the Jamaica Employers Federation.

The group reportedly reached consensus on the need for measures towards a sustainable productive sector.

Trade unionists have been expressing concerns that the workforce will be seriously affected if the government does not move to address the problem.

Mr. Charles told the Gleaner Power 106 News that further discussions are to held in an effort to find the best way to deal with the situation.

While the likely number of workers to be laid off was not discussed, Mr. Charles says the matter will be dealt with at further meetings of the committee.
