Constitutional Lawyer Dr. Lloyd Barnett said he is disappointed with the manner in which the 2-week debate on the retention of the death penalty was conducted.

Dr. Barnett said many of the contributions by the parliamentarians were lacking in sound reasoning.

He further described the behaviour of some members of parliament as inappropriate.

Dr. Carolyn Gomes, the Executive Director of Jamaicans For Justice had also criticised the manner in which some parliamentarians conducted themselves during the vote yesterday.

According to Dr. Barnett, such behaviour is one of the many factors that lead to the country’s social deterioration.

Like many other critics of the death penalty, Dr. Barnett is adamant that such a move will not curtail criminal activities in the country.

He said the government should work on improving the justice system’s ability to solve criminal cases.
