Dabdoub lawyer completes submission
The lawyer representing PNP candidate Abe Dabdoub in the dual citizenship case involving West Portland MP Daryl Vaz, today completed his submissions in the appeal court.
Dabdoub had filed an election petition after the September 3 general election last year.
He’s contending that Vaz is not eligible to be a member of parliament because he was the holder of an American passport and had pledged allegiance to a foreign state.
Attorney at law Gail Nelson who represents Dabdoub today submitted that once the electors received the notice that Dabdoub had issued in the West Portland constituency, then electors became aware of the consequences of Vaz’s American citizenship status.
Nelson further submitted that the Chief Justice was wrong when she said in her ruling that Dabdoub’s notice was insufficient because it did not mention acknowledgement of allegiance to a foreign power.
The Chief Justice had ruled earlier this year that Vaz was not a duly elected Member of Parliament.
Dabdoub is seeking to be returned as the MP in the constituency.
Ransford Braham, the attorney for Vaz is to begin his submissions tomorrow.
