Security forces face challenges against crime - Security minister
The national security minister has disclosed that the security forces are facing several challenges in the fight against organised crime.
He says, to date, the security forces have identified over 200 known gangs in Jamaica of which 120 are active and dangerous.
These gangs are believed to be responsible for 80 percent of all crimes.
However, Colonel MacMillan said the shortage of police personnel is affecting the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s ability to deal with these gangs.
He said the ministry is trying to improve its training facility, which has deteriorated over the years, as it concentrates on recruiting more cops.
Colonel MacMillan said it would require an additional $600 million to restore the Police Academy to the level it was 15 years ago.
