Canadian police to train St Kitts cops

The twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is getting help from Canada to boost its crime-fighting capabilities.
Last Friday, Prime Minister and National Security Minister Denzil Douglas met with Jeffery Johnston of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to discuss the initiative.
The Canadians are expected to assist in training local law enforcement officers.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry of National Security, Astona Browne said the overall goal of the programme is to build internal capacity within the police and other security agencies.
She said the programme would also seek to make the agencies more efficient in dealing with all elements of criminal activity as well as the method of police service delivery in the federation.
The training programme, which is due to start next year, comes in the wake of a recent upsurge in crime here.
Last week, St. Kitts was rocked by a double murder, which brought to 22 the number of homicides since the start of the year.
