Gov’t order to pay injured mason $44m

The Supreme Court has ordered the Government to pay more than $44 million dollars in damages to Lloyd Clarke of Sav-la-mar Westmoreland.



Clarke who is a mason was shot in the back by a policeman two years ago.



He was 20 years old at the time.



Clarke was walking on Barclay Street in Sav-la-mar on July 24, 2006 when he was shot in the back.



He is now paralysed from the waist down.



He had sued the government and three policemen seeking damages for his injuries.



Justice Roy Anderson assessed the damages and awarded Clarke $26 million in general damages, for pain and suffering and loss of amenities.



He was also awarded US$7, 500 to buy a motorised wheel chair.



An additional $3.3 million dollars was awarded for loss of future earnings and $7.8 million for future nursing and personal care.
