No day of mourning for Portland tragedy
The government says it will not be going ahead with a suggestion for a day of mourning for the 14 persons who lost their lives tragically in Portland on Friday night.
Daryl Vaz, state minister in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) says instead, an appeal is being made for churches to collect special offerings for the victims of the tragedy.
Meanwhile Mr. Vaz says there are indications of increased support from the private sector for the fund established to help the children of the victims of the accident.
The fund dubbed \'A helping hand for the children of Portland\'s Rio Grande Valley\' was launched by the OPM yesterday.
An account has been opened at the National Commercial Bank, NCB.
The account number is 351-077-328 and deposits may be made at any NCB branch.
More than 50 children are said to have lost a parent in the accident which happened when a truck transporting market vendors to the Coronation market in Kingston plunged into a ravine in the Rio Grande Valley.
