JPS tamperproof cables - OUR concerned
The Office of Utilities Regulation, OUR says its concerned about plans by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), to install tamper proof cables in some communities.
The company says the move is intended to prevent the theft of electricity.
The cables could also result in legitimate customers losing their electrical power supplies if an attempt is made to steal electricity from a central supply point.
Director of Consumer and Public Affairs at the OUR David Geddes says the regulatory body has made contact with the JPS in order to obtain further information on the company’s planned use of tamper proof cables.
Mr. Geddes says the OUR will be ensuring that the rights of legitimate consumers of electricity are protected.
The JPS has claimed that its losing US$17.25 million a year because of electricity theft.
