A local group is reportedly having serious discussions regarding the possibility of being a major player in the future operation of the national airline, Air Jamaica.

According to Vice President of the National Workers’ Union, Granville Valentine, members of the group have so far approached the union for consultations on the matter.

The Government says it’s now in the final phase of the divestment process for the airline.

The private sector arm of the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, has been contracted as consultants in the divestment process, which is expected to be completed in March.

Mr Valentine says he is concerned that with the deadline as close as March, there has been no discussion with the unions.

He warning that the union will not tolerate a shutdown of the airline.

The airline has sustained accumulated losses of $86 billions with $12 billion incurred in 2007 alone.
