Charles urges more companies to take proactive approach
Labour Minister Pearnel Charles is recommending that more companies take a proactive approach to prevent major job losses in light of the global financial crisis.
He has further commended the move by telecommunications giant, Digicel to offer some of its employees voluntary redundancy.
Yesterday, Digicel disclosed that about 450 positions will be made redundant across the region.
Mr. Charles said he’s satisfied with the move because the company has made temporary provisions for the well being of the employees after they lose their jobs.
Mr. Charles is again warning employers against using the global financial crisis as an excuse to fire workers.
He said some companies have been found in breach of the rules governing redundancies.
He said employers should not fire workers unless its absolutely necessary.
