Prime Minister Bruce Golding is to make a statement in parliament this afternoon regarding the resignation of Governor General Professor Sir Kenneth Hall.

His resignation has been confirmed by a source at the Jamaica Information Service (JIS).

Sir Kenneth has reportedly said his decision to resign was due to health reasons.

He has also advised the Queen of England and the Cabinet of his decision.

Our news centre has learnt that president of the West Indies Union of Seventh Day Adventists, Dr. Patrick Allen has been tipped to replace him.

However, when contacted Dr. Allen declined to confirm this.

Sir Kenneth was appointed to the post on February 16, 2006 and was knighted by the queen in November 2007.

He’s the fifth person, and fourth Jamaican, to hold this position since Independence in 1962.

Prior to assuming his position as Governor-General, Professor Kenneth Hall was Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.

In 2004, the Government of Jamaica conferred on him the Order of Jamaica for significant contribution to education and regional development.

He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in History from the Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada.
