House approves Jury amendment Act

The government has taken one step closer to reducing the backlog in the island’s courts.

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed an amendment to the Jury Act, which is expected to increase efficiency in the courts.

The amendments will enable the Registrar of the Supreme Court to make appropriate arrangements for serving summonses to jurors.

This means the Commissioner of police is no longer responsible for serving such summonses.

The amendments will also result in a widening of the pool of persons from which jurors can be chosen.

The list will now include all persons holding a Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN).

The amendments were passed in the Senate last year July.
