St. Ann bauxite job cuts
The management of the St. Ann Bauxite Company say a reduction in the demand for bauxite on the international market has resulted in its decision to trim its work force by 20 per cent.
Approximately 150 workers employed to the company are expected to lose their jobs before the end of the first quarter of the year.
Human Resource Manager at the company, Nelson Barton says all categories of workers including contractors and temporary workers at its three locations in the parish will be affected.
The decision by the company is based on ongoing cost reductions brought about by the global financial crisis and the significant reduction for the demand of bauxite and alumina.
According to Mr. Barton the workers will be notified ahead of the date they are expected to leave the company.
The human resource manager says plans are being put in place to have counselling for workers who might be impacted by the reduction.
There are no plans by the company to reduce its production level he added.
Yesterday Alumina Partners of Jamaica announced plans to cut 250 temporary jobs.
