NWC wage dispute

The University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU) has written to the labour ministry seeking its intervention in a dispute between managerial staff and the management of the National Water Commission (NWC).

The employees are upset with a decision taken by the company to withdraw an offer it had made on fringe benefits as part as an increase in salary.

President of the UAWU, Lambert Brown, said the union has not been able to arrive at an agreement regarding the outstanding issue in the current wage negotiations.

Mr. Brown said the company had already committed to providing ten million dollars to improve fringe benefits to workers.

He said during a meeting on Monday the company withdrew the offer.

Mr. Brown said the union had already accepted an increase in salary of 15 percent in year one and 10 percent in year two.

He said the fringe benefits are to further complement the increase granted.

Mr. Brown said the union would make every effort to meet with the ministry and the company’s management at the earliest possible time to resolve the issue.
