In an effort to curtail the spiralling crime rate in St. James, police in the division yesterday carried out a series of raids and spot checks across the parish.

Yesterday, senior officers said that a total of 25 persons were detained during the raids.

One of the detainees was arrested and charged under the dangerous drugs Act and is to face the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court later this week.

Police have not released his name.

The other 24 persons were processed and released.

St. James recorded more than 200 murders in 2008, the highest number in recent history.
