The Cabinet has approved the establishment of a commission to conduct an in-depth study of the issues surrounding reparations for Jamaican descendants of former slaves.

The commission, to be chaired by university professor Barry Chevannes, will be given 18 months after it begins sitting to present its recommendations to Culture Minister Olivia \"Babsy\" Grange.

Miss Grange said the commission would hear submissions from Jamaicans here and overseas as part of its effort to get a full reflection of public opinion.

According to Miss Grange the scope of the commission has already been worked out.
