Cockpit Boundary Committee submit report

The committee established to study the boundaries of the Cockpit Country in Trelawny has completed its work and submitted a report to Parliament.

But the country will have to wait a bit longer to find out the boundaries suggested by the multi-disciplinary team from the University of the West Indies Mona Campus.

Information Minister Olivia Grange said the committee submitted its report to the Cabinet in December but recommended that there should be a period of public consultations on the proposed boundaries.

The committee had been established in January 2007 by the then People\'s National Party administration after the public outcry over a decision by the government to allow the bauxite mining company JAMALCO to continue mineral exploration activities in sections of St. Ann and Trelawny.

Several groups opposed the decision arguing that the Cockpit Country was too valuable to be destroyed by bauxite mining.
