The National Workers Union, NWU, is reporting that permanent workers at Alumina Partners of Jamaica, ALPART, should be able to secure their jobs for at least another six months.

There have been concerns that there could be another job cut at the St Elizabeth based bauxite plant, as it struggles to deal the effects of the global economic downturn.

But the NWU president, Vincent Morrison said the union has reached an agreement with ALPART to save the jobs of permanent workers.

The union held talks with the ALPART management today.

Mr. Morrison said he could not release the details of the agreement at this time, but he said he is satisfied with its terms and conditions.

According to Mr. Morrison meetings have been scheduled for next week with workers to outlined aspects of the agreement.

Earlier this month ALPART said it was making redundant 250 temporary positions at the company.

It also said a decision would be taken about other positions shortly.
