Government considering selling Alcoa shares

The Government is considering selling its shares in the Clarendon-based Jamalco Alumina plant.

The Government owns 50 per cent in the company while Alcoa owns the remaining 50 per cent.

But Mr Golding said the plant has been racking up debts, which cannot be sustained.

He told Parliament today that the company has incurred a total of 504 million US dollars or 42 point 3-3 billion Jamaican dollars.

According to Mr Golding, the Government will have to make a decision, which is in the best interest of the country.

He said discussions were underway with a number of interests but declined to say more on the matter at this time.
