NWU dissatisfied with sugar divestment deal

The National Workers Union (NWU) has expressed its disappointment over the failed sugar divestment deal.

President of the NWU, Vincent Morrison said he was even more dissatisfied that there was no indication from the government that it would continue to operate the five state owned factories.

Mr Morrison said he’s worried that over 1,800 people who depend on the industry could be directly affected.

Mr Morrison is also concerned about the future of the Bernard Lodge Sugar factory in St. Catherine and the implications it will have on Spanish Town.

He said there is demand for over 270,000 tonnes of sugar both locally and on the international market.
