Riverton Landfill ablaze

Firefighters and a team from the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) are now trying to control a blaze at the Riverton Landfill in Kingston.



The fire, which began sometime after one this afternoon, is said to be towards the back of the facility.



Executive Director of the NSWMA, Joan Gordon Webly said while there is enough cover material to dump on the fire, there is a shortage of heavy equipment and water.



The Executive Director is appealing for persons with heavy equipment to help put out the blaze.



Mrs Gordon Webly said residents living near the landfill are not directly affected by the smoke from the blaze. The landfill will also remain open for the collection of garbage and other waste material.



The cause of the fire is not yet known.





A section of the Riverton Landfill in Kingston is now on fire.



The blaze which began over an hour ago is said to be contained towards the back of the landfill.



Executive Director at the National Solid Waste Management Authority, Joan Gordon Webly says although the fire department has been notified no unit has turned up to help in putting out the blaze.
