The Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) said its continuing daily monitoring of retail establishments for peanut butter products, which have been recalled by the Kellogg Company in the United States.

At least eight persons have so far been reported killed in the US after consuming the products, which were said to be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Team Leader at the BSJ’s Inspectorate Division, Jennifer Aquart, said its teams will continue its monitoring over the next few months.

Since a voluntary recall was issued by Kellogg on January 14, the company’s local distributor, Wisynco Group Limited has been removing particular products from warehouses and retailers.

These products are Keebler Toast and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers and Keebler Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers.

In the United States, the Kellogg Company has been removing from shelves certain Austin and Keebler branded Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers and select snack-size packs of Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies and Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies.

The Bureau of Standards is advising consumers who may have purchased any of these products to return them to the points of purchase for full refunds.

The Bureau further warns that the products are not to be consumed.

The BSJ said it is working with the Consumer Affairs Commission, the Jamaica Customs and the Ministry of Health, in an effort to ensure the health and safety of Jamaicans.
