The National Parent-Teachers Association (NPTA) has welcomed a decision by the education ministry put a freeze on an increase in auxiliary fees.

President Miranda Sutherland said the move would reduce the burden on parents.

She said the education ministry must ensure that the learning facilities available to students are not compromised.

At the same time, she is encouraging parents to continue to pay the required fees.

Yesterday, the education ministry announced that it has asked school administrators not to increase auxiliary fees for the upcoming academic year.

The president of the Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools, Nadine Malloy, said schools will not be able to function if they do not get more Government support.

The freeze on auxiliary contributions comes as the country battles the global financial crisis.
