Opposition oppose plans to advertise Solicitor General post

Opposition spokesman on Justice, Senator A.J Nicholson is opposing plans by the government to advertise the position of solicitor general.

Senator Nicholson said the proposal for a new functionary to be appointed threatens to set a precedent where the laws may be flouted to meet the wishes of the Prime Minister.

He also warned that if this is allowed Jamaicans will later regret allowing it to happen.

The opposition spokesman says the Governor General is bound by the constitution to appoint a Solicitor General when a recommendation is made to him by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

According to him the Governor General’s failure to act on the recommendation of the former PSC members was in breach of the constitution.

The then PSC had recommended that Professor Stephen Vasciannie be appointed the new Solicitor General.

Senator Nicholson has also condemned the dismissal of the former PSC.

The legitimacy of that dismissal remains to be decided by the Supreme Court.

The Solicitor General\'s post became vacant last October when Michael Hylton resigned.
