The Jamaica Public Service Company has announced plans to implement its theft -resistant programme in Clifton, St. Catherine.

In a release, the company said it met with the residents from the community to sensitise residents about the programme.

According to the JPS, the company will be able to recover $11.2 million monthly through the programme.

The programme, costs over $9 million to implement and will involve JPS removing all illegal connections and meters from customers’ premises. The company will then install a meter centre on a pole that will host groups of up to four sealed meters.

The company said each customer’s meter would be locked into the Meter Centre to reduce any opportunity for meter tampering. The company is also to make its distribution lines inaccessible to also reduce theft.

JPS said despite its implementation of a range of initiatives aimed at reducing electricity theft, over 13% of the electricity generated by JPS was stolen in 2008.

The programme has also been implemented in Portmore Villas in St. Catherine, Bull Bay, St. Andrew and Retirement, St. James.
