Cops search for robbers

The search is on for five robbers who held up a security guard and stole his service firearm and cell phone before escaping with an undetermined sum of cash from a hardware store in St Ann early this morning.

A safe in which the money was being stored has since been found at the back of the hardware, however none of the cash has been recovered.

According to the St Ann police, the men, armed with iron pipes, a crow bar and a sledgehammer, entered the premises of Samuels’ Hardware in Drax Hall around 1 p.m.

The police said two masked robbers went into the guardhouse and tied up the security guard with electrical and plastic cords.

His face was also rapped in curtains.

It’s reported that one of them watched him as the others entered the building.

After the robbers fled, the security guard managed to free himself and alerted two men who live on the premises who then called the police.

The police said the burglar bars and louvre blades to the accounting department and the manager’s offices were removed in order to access the safe.

The robbers also took a Dell desktop computer.

The robbery took place just hours after the St Ann Chamber of Commerce, president Horace Wildes, expressed disappointment at the low turnout of business persons at a meeting called by the St Ann police to discuss how crime was affecting the parish.

Wildes said the low turnout meant that people were not willing to put themselves in a position to make a change.
