The National Workers Union (NWU) wants to meet the Local Government Ministry to resolve an issue concerning a warder at the St Catherine Infirmary.

The Gleaner/ Power 106 News has learned that the St Catherine Parish Council has recommended that the warder be retired in the public’s interest.

The warder, Derma Brown, is alleged to have refused to help an injured inmate who had been attacked at the infirmary on January 6 this year.

The inmate later died.

The parish council has accused the warder of negligence.

The NWU, which represents workers at the infirmary, said the council has recommended that the warder be retired without a hearing.

NWU vice president, Howard Duncan, said this is not acceptable.

He said if a resolution is not arrived at, the matter would be referred to the Labour Ministry.
