Student sentenced
A 15-year-old Donald Quarrie High School student has been given a two year suspended sentence on charges of possession of offensive weapons.
The student will not have to serve time in custody unless she is convicted on another offence within the two-year period.
Before handing down the sentence in the Corporate Area Family Court, the magistrate warned the teenager about her future conduct.
The 15-year-old girl was among a group of students held by members of the Island Special Constabulary Force in downtown Kingston last November.
She was found with a knife and an ice pick in her bag.
The girl claimed that she was carrying the weapons because she was worried about the spate of abductions at that time.
But the police said she was part of a group of children who repeatedly skipped school and idled in downtown Kingston.
At the time, other students who had tried to evade the police were found with change of clothes in their school bags.
