Thwaites to moot dual citizenship resolution
Central Kingston MP Ronnie Thwaites has served notice that he will be moving a resolution in Parliament for members to declare their citizenship.
There has been increasing debate over the status of MPs since the Appeals Court ruled that the JLP’s Daryl Vaz is not eligible to remain in the House.
The Court held that Mr Vaz was an American at the time of his nomination and therefore he is not eligible to sit as the West Portland member.
A by-election, which was ordered, has since been announced for March 23.
Three other dual citizenship cases are still before the court.
They involve JLP Members of Parliament, Michael Stern, Shahine Robinson and Gregory Mair.
Mr Thwaites said the Parliament should not have to await the outcome of the cases to know whether all MPs are rightfully in the House.
He is getting support from the president of the Senate, Oswald Harding.
