Tufton appoints advisory board for Fishing industry

The Agriculture Ministry has proposed the appointment of an advisory board to foster more effective partnership between the government and stakeholders in the fisheries industry.



Agriculture Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, said the fisheries division is to be changed to an executive agency.



Dr. Tufton said this should transform and better regulate the ailing fishing industry.



The board is to be chaired by Richard Sasso.



A revision of the fisheries regulation and laws to protect the industry are also to take place.



Dr. Tufton said under the reform, several programmes to assist farmers will also be considered.



He said the ministry is committed to ensuring that the industry has proper facilities including storage and sanitary conveniences on the shores.



He also said farmers should be encouraged to practice more sustainable fishing practices.
