Transport Authority’s operational procedures to be reviewed
A team led by Transport and Works Minister, Mike Henry, is to undertake a major review of a number of operational procedures and policies within the public transportation sector, particularly in relation to aspects the Transport Authority (TA) and the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) operations.
The review comes after recent protests by persons within the public transportation sector about some policies such as the ban on the use of radios, cd and dvd equipment in taxis and buses. The Transport Authority (TA) has since agreed to use its discretion in enforcing this rule.
In a release from the Ministry, Henry said that the review was intended to revisit, clarify and more effectively communicate a number of transport policies, with a view of establishing more order among PPV operators.
Some of the things to be reviewed are the number and outlay of sub-licences, which the JUTC, through the TA, has granted across the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR) over the years. Also he will examine the grouping, representation and general adherence to the rules governing the licences of all Public Passenger Vehicles (PPV) operators island-wide.
The Minister also said, in the meantime, there are a rules in place that will have to be followed by those involved until they are abolished or officially relaxed.
