Portmore Municipal Committee wins case
The Portmore Municipal Support Committee has won a case against the Portmore Municipal Council in St Catherine.
The award was just under $481,000 in damages and costs.
The award stemmed from a 2004 telethon put on by the committee to get money to build a home for the elderly in Portmore.
The telethon reportedly reaped profits, which were allegedly handed over to the Portmore Municipal Council.
Shortly after taking office, the new administration led by Mayor Keith Hinds said the council could not account for the money.
The matter, which implicated Aneita Lee, the wife of former Mayor George Lee and Karen Kennedy was taken before the courts for a ruling.
The law firm Knight and Junor defended Mrs Lee and Kennedy.
When the head of the Portmore Municipal Council Keith Hinds was contacted by phone, he said his attorney had not formally informed him of the judgement.
In his response, Mr. Lee said he was pleased as the incident had caused great embarrassment to him.
The judgement was handed down on February 26 and documents regarding the case were served to the Municipal Council on March 3.
