Fertiliser controversy - Clarke calls press briefing

Published:Thursday | March 19, 2009 | 8:46 AM

The Opposition spokesman on agriculture Roger Clarke has called a press briefing for today to respond to reports that local tests have cleared the controversial imported fertiliser.

Mr Clarke had raised concerns about the safety of the product after receiving complaints that it emitted a very obnoxious scent.

Mr Clarke had also demanded that local testing be done on the fertilizer, which contains human excreta, to verify its safety.

Yesterday the commerce Minister Karl Samuda came with proof.

He said testing by the Bureau of Standard and the Scientific Research Council revealed that imported fertiliser is safe.

Mr. Samuda also demanded that Mr Clarke retract his earlier comments indicating that the produce could be harmful.
