Warder returns to work
The warder at the St Catherine Infirmary who was sent home after a mishap at the institution is back on the job at least for now.
Derma Brown was instructed to return to work by the Parish Council Service Commission pending a review of the accusation against her.
The St. Catherine Parish Council had recommended that Miss Brown be retired in the public’s interest.
The council made the recommendation after Miss Brown allegedly refused to help an injured inmate who was attacked at the infirmary on January 6.
The inmate later died.
The parish council accused Miss Brown of negligence and sent her home.
The National Workers Union (NWU), which represents workers at the infirmary, said the council did not allow the warder a fair hearing.
Vice president of the NWU’s Howard Duncan said it is clear that the council’s approach was ill advised.
Mr. Duncan says he is confident that the worker will be exonerated.
