Seaga proposes cut in public sector

Former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga is proposing a cut in the size of the public sector to reduce the effects of the expected US recession on Jamaica.



A recession occurs when a country records two consecutive quarters of economic decline.



Mr. Seaga is recommending that the government consider a voluntary redundancy system, for public sector workers similar to that of the 1980’s.



He said a restructuring of the public sector could result in a growth in the economy.



Last week, the Prime Minister, Bruce Golding said there was no plan to cut the public sector at this time.



However, he said there is a clear need for the level of efficiency to be improved.



He also said the public sector wage had to be better contained.
