Broadcasting Commission find News Talk 93FM in breach

The Broadcasting Commission has taken action against News Talk 93 FM for transmitting what it calls derogatory and abusive comments by a presenter at the radio station.



In a release this morning, the Commission said the host of a morning talk show programme made the comments on January 2.



According to the Commission, the host made prolonged, hostile and abusive remarks about an employee of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona, which breached the Television and Sound Broadcasting Regulations.



The regulatory agency found that the programme also breached the Children’s Code for Programming, which bars abusive or denigrating language.



The Commission has ordered licencee for the radio station, to indicate what disciplinary action will be taken against the talk show host.



It also ordered News Talk 93FM to air a series of apologies this week.



The Commission said given the seriousness of the breach, it will be making certain recommendations to the Information Minister pending a further operational review.



The regulatory body said it has increased its scrutiny of News Talk 93FM.
