Prime Minister, Bruce Golding announced plans to develop the eastern section of the island during a Real Estate Symposium at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston today.
He said this is another step in diversifying the tourism product.
According to Mr. Golding a major aspect of the development will involve the establishment of an airport in Portland, which will include a customs and immigration department.
Mr. Golding said plans are also being put in place to upgrade the road from Duckenfield to Port Antonio.
The National Works Agency (NWA), has been instructed to evaluate the re-alignment of the roads in the area to prepare for the development, he added.
