Bakers raise concerns for raw material

The Bakers Association of Jamaica raised concerns about the future implications the high cost for raw material will have on the baking industry.



Members of the association said they are faced with rapid increases in the prices of raw material, fuel, electricity and labour.



The association said the rising cost is threatening to close several bakeries islandwide. So far, nine bakeries have been closed within the last ten months.



The association called a press conference for today, to highlight several alternatives it believes can assist the industry.



President of the Bakers Association, Gerry Chambers, said the association is very concerned about what will happen after a government subsidy on wheat and flour is lifted.
