Christmas in the City - Home makeovers high on shopping lists
Redecorating the home is the top priority for Christmas shoppers this year, according to store owners and shoppers across the capital city.
A walk through the shopping districts and stores sees shoppers looking at curtains, drapes, comforters, bed linen, bath mats, upholstery, and various household items as they look to brighten up their homes for the holidays.
Getting these items before the Christmas rush guarantees you getting just what you're looking for, agree some ladies.
"We come downtown every year in early December to get what we need to redo our bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and curtains for the living room," said a middle-age woman travelling with her girlfriends.
Residing in the Meadowbrook community, she said it is a tradition for her and her girlfriends to head downtown early every December for the "good stuff at the best prices".
"We all know store owners put out the Christmas stock from late November to early December, so coming out early when the stock just hits the shelves guarantees you getting what you want," she said.
Will her shopping team be at Christmas in the City on December 15?
"Definitely!" they shouted in unison.
Men, women, and children's clothing are also top sellers, as well as toys, said Norma Spence, manager for Ammar's King Street.
Ammar's has already put out new stock and shoppers are already making their early selections. But they have more in store for the December 15 Christmas in the City.
"Last year was good, the store was jam-packed. I couldn't even have lunch," laughed Spence. "I expect and hope this year will be better, and we are more prepared for it."
Notwithstanding the bleak economic climate, shoppers say they intend to add life to their homes this Christmas with lots of decorations.
"Although tings ruff, mi still afi put up some light and decoration fi di Christmas," said one woman. "Mi cyan mek Christmas just so-so suh. Di house afi decorate and a nice dinner afi deh pon di table."
Food rounds out the top-five list of priority shopping for the holidays.
"No matter how bad the economy is or how tight things get, people never cease to stock up on groceries for the Christmas," said a wholesaler on Orange Street, Kingston. "Having a beautiful home and ample supply of food always takes pride of place."
