SOME ESSENTIAL service providers have indicated that they are beginning to feel the ripple effects of the rising petrol prices locally due to mounting tensions in sections of Northern Africa.

While there will be no increase for National Water Commission (NWC) customers or commuters who rely on Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses, Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) customers may not be so fortunate.

Yesterday, the JPS, in a written response to questions from The Gleaner, said changes in fuel costs are reflected on customers' electricity bills.

JUTC communications manager, Reginald Allen, said the option of a fare increase was not on the table, although the company's fuel costs have skyrocketed despite numerous efforts to improve efficiency.

Bus fares were increased last year.

NWC public relations manager, Charles Buchanan, said the company had been negatively affected by the rising petrol prices.

The NWC got a new rate structure in 2008 that runs until 2013.
