MAJ raise concerns on broadcasting commission recommendation

The Media Association of Jamaica (MAJ) has raised concerns about the recommendation by the Broadcasting Commission that the licence of Newstalk 93 FM be suspended.
The commission made the recommendation to Information Minister, Olivia Grange after it found that there were two successive breaches of the Television and Sound Broadcasting Regulations.
The MAJ said it is concerned about the level of power the commission is able to exercise in such matters.
According to the MAJ, the commission is able to act as investigating officer, prosecutor, judge and jury giving rise to a scenario that opposes natural justice.
The association said the broadcaster should have the right to be heard by either the full commission or by an independent arbiter before a decision is taken.
The MAJ has also raised questions regarding whether the punishment fits the offence.
It said it would be writing to Ms. Grange to ask that steps be taken to ensure the system is fair and just.
The University of the West Indies (UWI), which is a shareholder in the company that operates Newstalk 93FM, said it is looking forward to meet with the Minister and to present its perspective on the matter.
