New Security Minister sworn in

Colonel Trevor MacMillan was sworn in this morning as a government Senator and National Security Minister in a ceremony at Kings House.
He takes over from Derrick Smith, who has been reassigned the mining and telecommunications portfolio.
Mr. Smith served at the helm of the national security ministry for eight months.
In accepting his new role, Colonel MacMillan pledged to serve the needs of the Jamaican people.
The way was made clear for Colonel MacMillan’s appointment to the senate by the resignation of senator Ian Murray.
It is unclear what will happen with Colonel MacMillan’s current position as a special advisor to the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding sought to justify his decision to appoint Colonel MacMillan to the National Security portfolio.
Mr. Golding announced Colonel MacMillan’s appointment yesterday, just days after the government outlined new measures to tackle the country’s crime problems.
