A state of emergency has been declared in the islands of Grand Turk and South Caicos in the Turks and Caicos chain following the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike.

In a statement late last night, the government of Premier Michael Misick said the severity of the situation is now more evident given that communication has been restored.

He said the declaration of the state of emergency means that all efforts will be focused on urgently rehabilitating Grand Turk and South Caicos.

In the meantime the government is to get around 6 point 3 million US dollars from the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility to help in its recovery.

Hurricane Ike, packing winds of 130 mile per hour battered the country just a week after Tropical Storm Hanna drenched it.

Ike damaged about 85 per cent of homes in Grand Turk and also severely impacted Salt Cay and South Caicos.
