Court hands down written judgement today

The Court of Appeal is to provide its much anticipated written judgement in the Vaz/Dabdoub dual citizenship case today.

On February 27, the Appeals Court upheld a Supreme Court order for a by-election in West Portland.

The Appeals Court delayed the presentation of its reasons.

The written judgement should outline the basis on which the by-election was ordered in constituency, which was held by the JLP’s Daryl Vaz.

Last year, Chief Justice Zaila McCalla ruled that Mr Vaz was not eligible to remain in Parliament because he was a US citizen at the time of his nomination in 2007.

The PNP’s, Abe Dabdoub who had initiated the court action, appealed against the by-election order claiming that he should have been awarded the seat since he was the only duly nominated candidate.

Kenneth Rowe, a former Jamaica Labour Party member has now been selected to run for the PNP against Mr Vaz is the by-election set for March 23.
