Horseracing at Caymanas Park

native-bred three-year-old colts and geldings, in preparation for the 2000 Guineas in April, hold centre stage at Caymanas Park today in the 1200-metre Sir Howard Stakes.

Eight starters have been declared, including the unbeaten pair of ROYAL ASSAULT and RAS EMANUEL, to be ridden by reigning champion Dane Nelson and four-time champion Omar Walker, respectively.

Wayne DaCosta-trained SUPERTRONICS has Shane Ellis aboard.

ROYAL ASSAULT, from the stables of in-form trainer Anthony Nunes, will more than likely start favourite, having won in the fairly good time of 1:07.0, on his January 1 debut, at 1100 metres, a howling 1-5 favourite.

ROYAL ASSAULT has looked sharp in his preparation and will report an improved animal. The chestnut colt, by Blue Pepsi Lodge out of Mayken Joy, reports with Lasix administered for the first time. This will definitely help his cause.

ROYAL ASSAULT has good speed and with the trip ideal, should set off in front and make every post a winning one.

Vying for minor placings

SUPERTRONICS and the Peter McMaster trained RAS EMANUEL (Lasix applied) should be chasing ROYAL ASSAULT from early. While both will keep him honest throughout, they should be vying for the minor placings in deep stretch.

SUPERTRONICS notched his maiden win by a wide margin, over the round-five course, last December. He was not disgraced when chasing home classy SIEMPRE BUENO in a fast-run 1100-metre race (1:04.3) on January 17.

Beaten by 10 lengths that day, his final time of 1:06.3 was fairly good returning well trained, looks the principal danger to ROYAL ASSAULT.

Other firm fancies on the 10-race programme, which features a Pick-9 carryover of $4.6 million, are unbeaten three-year-old colt SIEMPRE BUENO, to complete the hat-trick in the opening 1200 metres race; EASTWOOD, claimed for $450,000 out of his last race, to romp the third for new trainer Neive Graham; MISS JUANITA to go one better in the fifth; and speedy TALENTED TONY K, who recently equalled the straight-five track record, to repeat over the course in the seventh for open allowance horses.
